Chris McGee, the owner of Maxo Marketing LLC in Charlotte, announced his acquisition of Travelhost of Vermont magazine, part of the Travelhost network. Galen and Jill Jones have become lead investors in Crowley Cheese Co. Inc. in Healdville, which was forced to suspend production last year during the economic downturn. Galen Jones, a management consultant, is applying his expertise in strategic planning, finance, and operations to the company’s production and operations; Jill Jones, a former marketing executive, is leading the revitalization of the company’s sales and marketing efforts. Crowley has resumed the sale of its traditional, artisanal cheese.

Shadow Productions announced the opening of a Rochester, Minn., location. Alex Ball, a longtime Vermont employee, is running the Minnesota operation. Matt Dugan, president of the multimedia marketing company, made the announcement. Ball made the move when his wife, Dr. Bobbi Pritt, took a position with the Mayo Clinic.

Kittredge Equipment Co.

Wendy Webber, president of Kittredge Equipment Co. Inc. announced the relocation of the company’s Vermont division to 484 Avenue D, Williston. The 18,000-square-foot building features a bright and newly designed showroom, high-bay warehouse storage, sales offices, and conference facilities. Kittredge is a family-owned distributor of food service equipment and supplies.

Leadville Insurance leased 1,605 square feet of office space at 84 Pine St., Burlington, from Leonora LLC. Leadville is the captive insurance company for Macy’s department stores nationwide. Vermont Business Brokers represented Walter and Jane Delia in the sale of their company Vermont Chocolatiers to Anthony Battaglia. John Beal of Vermont Business Brokers was the listing broker, and Sharon Beal was the selling broker.

Vermont Trophy & Engraving signed a lease to relocate its manufacturing and showroom facility to 566 Hercules Drive in Colchester. Central Vermont Medical Center announced the following appointments. Nancy Lothian was promoted to chief operating officer. Judy Tarr, president and CEO, made the announcement. Derek Kouwenhoven, RN, CEN, MSN, was named director of critical care services, which encompass the emergency department and The Davis Special Care Unit. Trisha L. Hunt was hired as radiation oncology manager at CVMC’s National Life Cancer Treatment Center. She was at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Daniel K. Fram, M.D., was named radiation oncologist at the cancer treatment center. He is assistant professor of radiology at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Michael Schweizer was hired as the cancer center’s dosimetrist, responsible for designing treatment plans directed by physicians who specialize in radiation oncology.

The Shelburne Art Center announced the re-establishment of its art gallery following the center’s move to its Harbor Road Campus. Holly Boardman, the creative director, made the announcement. The opening was celebrated with a reception and exhibition of works by Ayn Baldwin Riehle, Mark Awodey, Alice Eckles, Sage Tucker-Ketchum, Sean Dye, Robert Huntoon, Charles Norris Brown, Sarah Grillo, Barbara Efchak, Rick Rolla, Bob Green, Janet Auman, Kathleen Redmond, Pilar Netzel, Jay Rifken, Gretchen Begnoche, and Chris Solbert.

The Essex culinary resort and spa announced the hiring of Rob Chambers as human resources manager and Collin Parker as marketing coordinator. Chambers was with the Hilton Burlington for seven years. Parker’s experience includes five years as public relations coordinator at Fletcher Allen Health Care and 10 years in broadcast journalism.

Patrick Orloff joined Davis & Hodgdon Associates CPAs as a senior accountant. Orloff relocated from Colorado, where he worked in accounting with Ernst & Young.

SCORE announced the appointment of Bertil Agell as district director of its Vermont SCORE offices. Agell was the principal and manager of businesses in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Florida, New York, and Vermont. He has been a SCORE counselor for many years.

The Good Samaritan Haven Inc., an emergency homeless shelter, and Good Neighbors, both in Barre, appointed Kimberly Woolaver as executive director. Woolaver was with the Vermont State Housing Authority.

Organizing for America, a project of the Democratic National Committee, announced that Jesse Bragg was named Vermont state director. Bragg was regional field director for the Vermont Democratic Party’s coordinated campaign.

R. Lou Martinez joined the members’ financial services program at NorthCountry Federal Credit Union as a financial services representative, working from the credit union office on Swift Street in South Burlington. He has 11 years’ experience in the industry.

Pragmatic Technologies Inc. announced the hiring of Justin Newcom as software engineer. Newcom is a recent graduate of St. Lawrence University with majors in computer science and government.

Judy Ashley-McLaughlin, vice president of the board of the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans and chairwoman of the board’s search committee, announced the appointment of Jill Berry Bowen as the hospital’s chief executive officer. Bowen was with Mercy Hospital in Portland, Maine.

Data Innovations North America announced that Paul Dean was named implementation consulting services manager. Dean replaces Hunter Bagwell, who continues to lead the sales and marketing team.

Stratton Mountain announced the addition of Eric Langman as terrain park manager for the 2009-10 season. Langman, with more than 10 years’ experience with terrain parks and pipes, was in Vail, Colo.

Lynn E. Wilkinson, M.D., was appointed medical director of the hospitalist services at Central Vermont Medical Center. Wilkinson was an attending physician in the departments of primary care internal medicine and family practice at Fletcher Allen Health Care. Andrew Felsted, D.O., joined the emergency department staff at CVMC. He was with Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

TLC Nursing Associates announced that Lori Jordan was named director of marketing. Jordan earned a bachelor of political science from the University of Vermont and is in the MBA program at Champlain College.

Averill Cook joined V/T Commercial Real Estate as a real estate associate specializing in the sale and leasing of commercial properties in northwestern Vermont. Cook was associated with J.L. Davis and Neagley & Chase Construction.

Christina Erickson was named sustainability coordinator at Champlain College. Also a graduate fellow in the office of sustainability at the University of Vermont, Erickson is continuing work on her Ph.D. in natural resources. She has more than 10 years’ experience in campus environmental activism and sustainability.

Commerce Generation Inc., a developer of Web site e-commerce solutions, announced the hiring of Ryan Coughlin as Web developer. Coughlin is a student in Champlain College’s Class of 2010. Jenica Norrish was named online marketing and public relations coordinator. She is a 2008 graduate of Champlain College with a degree in public relations. •

CH Partners LLC bought a 22,500-square-foot mixed-use commercial building at 7 Fayette Road, South Burlington, from J&J Properties of Vermont. The sale included the building and a land lease with approximately 60 years remaining. Peter Yee of Redstone represented the seller and procured the buyer.

The board of directors of Shelburne Health & Fitness announced that it has acquired the assets of the Athletic Club business from Field House LLC. Speaking for the board, Don Helgesen, majority shareholder, said that SH&F will honor all Athletic Club memberships. Rayne Herzog, general manager of SH&F, will expand his duties to oversee the larger enterprise. •

October

Bud Reed, founder of Middlebury online marketing agency Timberline Interactive, announced a merger with e-commerce platform provider CommerceV3 of Pensacola, Fla. Reed is retiring from daily operational duties but will continue in an advisory role. Blake Ellis, co-founder of CommerceV3 with Nathan Focht, president, will serve as president of Timberline. Tom Funk, with Timberline for three years, will be vice president of marketing. 

Bolton Valley Resort announced construction of a wind turbine set to begin operating in late autumn. It is the first wind turbine to be built at a Vermont ski area and is designed to produce in excess of 300,000 kilowatts of power a  year. The announcement was made by Larry Williams, who owns the resort with Doug Nedde. They are partners in Redstone Group. The turbine was manufactured by Northern Power Systems of Barre.

Michael and Wendy Waggoner leased 1,200 square feet of retail space on North Main Street in Barre. Ross Montgomery of Redstone listed and leased the property. The Waggoners are opening a hot dog shop called Barre Dogs.

Sanel Auto Parts bought a 6,000-square-foot commercial building on Exchange Street in Middlebury. Duncan Harris of Redstone represented Sanel, and Tim Eaton of Lang McLaughry Spera represented the seller. After renovating the property, Sanel will move its sales and distribution business from Seymour Street.

Duncan Harris of Redstone represented Neil Matthews in the sale of Neil and Otto’s Pizza Cellar in Middlebury to Paul Neri. Harris also procured the buyer.

Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility and Local First Vermont announced they are merging their memberships. VBSR is a statewide business membership organization of more than 600 Vermont companies; Local First Vermont is a leading voice in the state’s “Buy Local” movement. The announcement was made by Julie Lineberger, chairwoman of VBSR’s board, and Chris Morrow, Local First Vermont’s board chairman.

Data Innovations, a global clinical laboratory middleware company in South Burlington, announced that it has acquired David G. Rhoads Associates, a developer of quality assurance, statistical analysis, and laboratory management software for clinical laboratories. Rhoads is a privately held Pennsylvania company. Data Innovations announced the acquisition of 100 percent of the equity interests of Rhoads. The announcement was made jointly by Gregory Vail, president of Data Innovations, and David Rhoads, president of Rhoads.

Ted Mable (left), executive director of Northwestern Counseling & Support Services, and David Carter, board president of the Champlain Islands Parent Child Center, announced the merger of the two organizations to provide more cost-effective services to Grand Isle and Franklin County consumers. Elizabeth King, parent-child center programs manager for NCSS, has assumed responsibility for parent-child center services for both counties.

The Vermont Chamber of Commerce announced that Betsy Bishop was named president. Bishop worked for Gov. James Douglas from his election in 2002, beginning with his transition team. She was most recently commissioner of economic development. She replaces Chris Barbieri, who has been interim president since the resignation of Duane Marsh.

Joyce Dicianna joined Earth Turbines Inc. as director of human resources. She has 30 years’ experience, most recently as executive vice president of Autumn Harp Inc.

Courtyard Marriott Taft Corner announced the hiring of Holly Durfee as director of sales. Durfee has 10 years’ experience in sales and marketing. Wendy Dybus was promoted to group sales coordinator. Hope Dooley was hired as front desk supervisor, replacing Dybus. Her experience includes an internship at the Disney College in Florida.

The North Country Animal League board of trustees announced that Deb Fennell was named executive director. Jim Sullivan, president of Magic Mountain, announced a co-op initiative wherein the public can purchase shares of the mountain and enjoy an equity position plus other amenities at the Londonderry ski resort. The opportunity is modeled after the Mad River Glen co-op in Waitsfield. The resort is issuing 1,000 shares priced at $3,000 per share, which will enable the setting up of an LLC, whereby the new shareholders will own 60 percent of the mountain.

The service provides a wireless mobile video unit called Deaf Talk, which can be wheeled anywhere in the hospital to provide on-demand, 24-hour-a-day American Sign Language video interpreting. Woodbridge Nursing Home, a division of CVMC, announced the hiring of three individuals to augment its physical and occupational therapy staff. Julie Griffis, PT, is rehabilitation services manager. Her experience includes work with adults in outpatient and acute-care settings, and children in the home health system. Daniel Fogel, president of the University of Vermont, announced the appointment of Bernard Cole as interim dean of the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences. He has served as director of the statistics program and professor of statistics for two years. He succeeds Domenico Grasso, who was appointed vice president for research and dean of the graduate college for UVM. Melody Brown Burkins was appointed to the office of the vice president and dean of the graduate college as senior director of research and strategic initiatives. Burkins has been associate dean for UVM CEMS since 2007. Dan Harvey was named chief of staff for the vice president and assistant dean of the graduate college. Elisabeth Robert, the former president of Vermont Teddy Bear, announced that she has bought a majority interest in catalog and direct-marketing company Terry Precision Cycling, a Rochester, N.Y., specialist in women’s bicycles and clothing. The founder, Georgena Terry, and Paula Byba, vice president of marketing, will stay on as equity partners.

Koosharem Corp, parent of The Select Family of Staffing Companies, completed its acquisition of Walnut Creek, Calif., company Westaff Inc. Westaff maintained a large network of franchise offices, of which the Mount Family Group LLC of Burlington was part. The Mounts operate Westaff branches in nine cities and towns in Vermont, New Hampshire, and New York, including offices in Burlington and St. Albans. Dave Mount writes a quarterly column for Business People-Vermont titled “Personnel Points.” There will be no change in the Westaff name or the ownership of the local branches, which were founded by the Mounts in 1982.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. announced that it has completed the acquisition of the Tully’s Coffee brand and wholesale coffee business from Tully’s Coffee Corp. for the purchase price of $40.3 million. Larry Blanford, president and chief executive officer of Green Mountain, made the announcement. Tully’s retail locations will continue to operate under license and supply agreements with GMCR. The retail and international business will remain independent, operating under the name of TC Global Inc., owned by its existing shareholders and managed by its existing management team.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will take occupancy of its new 25,450-square-foot building at 225 Harvest Lane in Williston in June. The building was designed by Wiemann-Lamphere Architects and is a LEED-certified project. Taft Corners Associates is the landlord for the building, and DEW Construction of Williston is the contractor. Jeff Nick, president of NAI/J.L. Davis Realty, who made the announcement, represented TCA.

Northern Vermont Lending Partners, a revolving micro-loan program of the Economic Development Council of Northern Vermont designed to help small businesses, announced a loan to Ed Shamy and his wife, Kikmberly Asch, to purchase The County Courier in Enosburg Falls. Shamy was a columnist for The Burlington Free Press before being laid off in August. The EDCNV’s micro-loan program lent Shamy the money needed to buy the 130-year-old Franklin County weekly, which, in turn, allowed him and his family to stay in Vermont.

Tim and Diane Mueller, the owners of Triple Peaks LLC, the parent company of Okemo Mountain in Vermont, Crested Butte in Colorado, and Mount Sunapee in New Hampshire, have sold the three ski resorts to CNL Lifestyle Properties of Orlando, Fla. Byron Carlock, the president and CEO of CNL, announced that CNL will lease the resorts back to Triple Peaks, which will provide additional capital to build the Red Lady Lodge at Crested Butte and move forward with construction of the Okemo conference center. Okemo is ranked by SKI magazine as eighth in the East overall. It made the Top 10 list in 11 of the magazine’s Reader Resort Survey categories in the Oct. 2008 issue. It is also home to the Okemo Valley Golf Club.

Tim Williams, the president of Mesa Contract Inc., a manufacturer/distributor of ergonomic office accessories, wood desk solutions, and steel components in Shelburne, announced the acquisition of Intellaspace from office furniture manufacturer Weber Knapp. Mesa will continue the Intellaspace brand and will expand on its portfolio of ergonomic office solutions.

The Vermont Foodbank was chosen to become the owner of the Kingsbury Farm in Warren by a group composed of the town of Warren, several Mad River Valley residents and organizations, and the Vermont Land Trust, which bought the farm to protect it and make it available for community uses. The Vermont Foodbank has committed to creating a fully functioning farm operation that will provide a wide variety of fresh produce for distribution to food shelves in the Mad River Valley and throughout Vermont’s charitable food system. A conservation easement will establish public access to the river and protect the farmland from development. The foodbank will renovate the facility to provide a four-season space for community meetings, office space, and educational programs.

The Vermont office of Progressive Asset Management announced a move to a newly constructed building in Wells. The building is powered by PV and passive solar energy and has a large solarium for passive heat collection. Todd Walker, the branch director, announced that in its first month of operation, the system saved 391 pounds of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere. The Wells office serves clients in Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and eastern New York.
