Cochran’s Ski Area. In Richmond, east of Burlington off of I-89. The closest ski area to Burlington. Three lifts, eight trails on 350 vertical feet. Rentals, lessons, loads of children’s programs.

Bolton Valley. South of Burlington off I-89. Offers 1,625 feet of skiing on 60 trails for beginner to expert skiers and boarders. All located at a mountain-top village on 5,200 acres. (877) 9BOLTON,

Burke Mountain. Seven miles off I-91, exit 23. Offers 2,000 vertical feet of skiing and riding. 40 trails, four lifts. 626-3322. www.skiburke.com .
Smugglers’ Notch. Three mountains and 72 trails. Lessons, rental equipment. Along with skiing and snowboarding, Smugglers’ Notch offers cross-country trails, sleigh rides, ice skating, sliding, night skiing and snow tubing.

Jay Peak. On Vermont 242 in Jay, 64 miles from Burlington, Jay Peak offers 66 trails and glades, Telemark, back country, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and cross‑country. (800) 451‑4449, 988‑2611. www.jaypeakresort.com .

Stowe Mountain Resort, about 40 miles from Burlington, six miles from Stowe Village on Vermont 108. Boasts 48 trails and cross‑country skiing at Vermont’s highest summit: 4,395 feet at the peak of Mt. Mansfield. Night skiing, too. 253‑3000,

Sugarbush Resort. 45 miles southeast of Burlington off I-89 in Warren. Sugarbush has 115 trails on two mountains, Mt. Ellen and Lincoln Peak, with connecting trails. Downhill skiing, riding, cross country and snowshoeing trails, guided back-country ski tours; rental equipment. There’s an extensive children’s program. Mad River Glen is in Waitsfield, 45 miles southeast of Burlington, off I-89. America’s only cooperatively owned ski area. The 43 trails are only for skiers. No snowboarding is allowed, but riders may drop off boards at the rental shop for free use of alpine or Telemark rentals. Ski school for all abilities. Cross‑country
All major ski areas offer cross-country skiing, as do those listed below. Throughout the season, the Vermont Cross-country Ski Report, 828-3239, is updated every Thursday by noon.
Blueberry Lake Cross Country Ski Center on Plunkton Rd. in Warren, offers grading and snow‑farming on all its trails to serve skiers from beginners to expert. Lessons, rentals and waxing available. 496‑6687.
Catamount Family Center on Gov. Chittenden Road, Williston, has a B&B, 30 km of trails, lessons, ski and snowshoe rentals and ice skating. Three lighted trails. (888) 680‑1011, 879‑6001.

Craftsbury Outdoor Center, Craftsbury Common, offers 135 km of tracked and skating trails, instruction, repair and rental, as well as ski packages and guided tours. 586‑7767.

Ole’s Cross Country Center at Sugarbush‑Warren Airport, Warren, has 50 km of groomed trails. Rentals, instruction and restaurant. 496‑3430.
Shelburne Farms, off U.S. 7 in Shelburne, has 1,400 acres of land, but employees encourage skiers to stay close to the visitor center. No rentals. No fee. 985‑8686. www.shelburnefarms.org .

Snowmobiling
Vermont boasts a trail system of more than 6,000 miles, with well‑marked trails and access to fuel stops, food and accommodations. The Vermont Association of Snow Travelers (VAST) and local clubs maintain the trails.

Snowshoeing
Many ski areas offer snowshoeing. Clearwater Sports on Vermont 100, Waitsfield, 496-2708; and Umiak Outdoor Outfitters, Stowe, 253-2317, give guided tours, including shoe rentals and instruction. Call ahead. •
